Computer Hardware

To be honest, before Mr. Hechler's talk I thought "computer hardware? who really cares about that?" but after he spoke and showed us the insides of the laptop and the two computers I became really interested. After seeing all the different parts of the computer it's kinda fascinating to hear about how people put all of the parts together. I really learned the difference between Mac hardware and PC hardware; kinda interesting to me since I've had both a Mac and a PC before. Well I really enjoyed his lecture and I am glad he came to show us some cool stuff.

PowerPoint Presentation

For my PowerPoint presentation I am going to discuss the clinical psychology field but more specifically dealing with children. This is a topic I am very interested in and am currently considering a career in psychology. I've started research already and I am looking forward to introduce my classmates to something that I have a passion for.

How to have a successful PowerPoint

Throughout many years of schooling, students will have to make tons of PowerPoints in order to show their knowledge of computers and or to help make presentations a little bit more active. However, since PowerPoint has so many features how does one know which are effective or how to make their PowerPoint presentation a lot better. For me, there are 5 guidelines people should follow when trying to make sure their PowerPoint is successful:
1. Use main ideas on each slide: do not write out everything you are going to say
2. Use a font that is large enough for people in the audience to see
3. Use a theme that is attractive but not distracting to the audience
4. Use pictures and audio only if it pertains to the topic discussed
5. Basically keep it simple so people will pay attention more to what you are saying and not the pretty colors on the screen.

If people follow those guidelines when making a PowerPoint presentation, they should have no problem making an effective PowerPoint.

The Internet

For the first part of the blog I am going to comment on a copyright issue titled: "They stole an image of my son and just had to pay $4000". In this article, an electronic company called Vinderen Elektriske used an image of the authors son in one of their advertisements. This is a violation of US copyright laws. I feel that the company rightfully had to pay the money due to the fact that they 1. did not notify the photographer and 2. they did not document where they received the photograph. I think the author is right in being upset solely from the fact that they did not apologize and grant some sort of compensation for using the picture. If it was my son or daughter I would not only want to know where they got the picture from but also an apology would be in order.

The second part of this blog refers to a lecture my computer class received about Internet searches and evaluating web pages. I actually learned a lot of interesting things about Google that I never knew before. For example, I learned that you can limit the domain on your searches (like only finding sites that are .gov or .edu). I also learned that there is a Google scholar site where you can search scholarly journals and websites. That site is going to be handy when I want only scholarly research for projects or things. It its funny because I thought I was a pretty good Google searcher but I still learned a lot of new things today.

PowerPoint

In order to have a successful PowerPoint the following things are needed:
- original designs (nothing too crazy)
- simple text, not long paragraphs
- only use pictures that are necessary to help express your topic

My Psychology professor uses PowerPoint and she only use short sentences that help stress the main topic but for further detail she lectures. Her PowerPoint's are really effective because when learning I don't spend the whole time trying to read tons of print on the PowerPoint but listen to her speaking and catch the key points from the PowerPoint.

Experience with Microsoft Word

As far as my experience with Microsoft Word, I feel that I am pretty skilled in using all that it has to offer. I have been writing tons of essays and pretty much know how to get by with the basic applications. However I am sure there are some shortcuts or better ways of doing stuff such as, inserting clip art and making my paper look more professional. I also think I need to review what each tab means and where to look for certain actions. I am excited to learn more about Word because I love to write and I feel it would help a lot with that.
