However, since PowerPoint has so many features how does one know which are effective or how to make their PowerPoint presentation a lot better. For me, there are 5 guidelines people should follow when trying to make sure their PowerPoint is successful:
1. Use main ideas on each slide: do not write out everything you are going to say
2. Use a font that is large enough for people in the audience to see
3. Use a theme that is attractive but not distracting to the audience
4. Use pictures and audio only if it pertains to the topic discussed
5. Basically keep it simple so people will pay attention more to what you are saying and not the pretty colors on the screen.

If people follow those guidelines when making a PowerPoint presentation, they should have no problem making an effective PowerPoint.

The Internet

For the first part of the blog I am going to comment on a copyright issue titled: "They stole an image of my son and just had to pay $4000". In this article, an electronic company called Vinderen Elektriske used an image of the authors son in one of their advertisements. This is a violation of US copyright laws. I feel that the company rightfully had to pay the money due to the fact that they 1. did not notify the photographer and 2. they did not document where they received the photograph. I think the author is right in being upset solely from the fact that they did not apologize and grant some sort of compensation for using the picture. If it was my son or daughter I would not only want to know where they got the picture from but also an apology would be in order.

The second part of this blog refers to a lecture my computer class received about Internet searches and evaluating web pages. I actually learned a lot of interesting things about Google that I never knew before. For example, I learned that you can limit the domain on your searches (like only finding sites that are .gov or .edu). I also learned that there is a Google scholar site where you can search scholarly journals and websites. That site is going to be handy when I want only scholarly research for projects or things. It its funny because I thought I was a pretty good Google searcher but I still learned a lot of new things today.

PowerPoint

In order to have a successful PowerPoint the following things are needed:
- original designs (nothing too crazy)
- simple text, not long paragraphs
- only use pictures that are necessary to help express your topic

My Psychology professor uses PowerPoint and she only use short sentences that help stress the main topic but for further detail she lectures. Currently I have a Sony Vaio but before I came to Trinity I worked with a Mac for about four years. As of now, I kind of wish I kept my Mac because I seem to have lots of problems with the Vaio; such as, having to get it fixed about four or five times since I got it in August.

So far I am pretty excited about the class. I am really looking forward to learning new things on the computer and hopefully when the semester is over I can prove to myself that maybe I am not completely useless when it comes to computers. As of right now I know how to use, PowerPoint, Microsoft word, Google, sometimes Microsoft excel, I-tunes and stuff to do with music, and instant messaging. I know there is more to computers than just that so I am looking forward to finding out just what they are.

Right now I am excited because I just figured out what a Y -drive is, and the shortcuts we made in class has made my life a little bit easier. Hopefully there is more surprises to come!

All About Me!

Welcome to my first blog...ever!

My name is Jamila Reynolds and I was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska. (Sorry I did not live in an Igloo or ride dogsleds to school...I know, what a disappointment!) Even though I was born in Alaska, I have moved around pretty much my whole life. I've lived in Alaska, California, Texas and London. My mom works for BP so we followed wherever the oil took us. My parents are divorced; my dad currently lives in Dallas and my mom (along with my younger brother) live in London England. As you can see I have a lot of homes, but mainly I consider myself from Alaska and London.
Here's a map of Anchorage:
http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=anchorage+alaska&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl

I have always been a really active person; I've played soccer, basketball, track, softball, I've swam and I've cheered. My whole life has pretty much revolved around sports since there wasn't a lot to do in Alaska. With that being said, I am currently a cheerleader at Trinity University. However, even though sports are my life, I like to do other things too like; shopping, talking on the phone (my mom would say I do this a lot), eating, taking naps, and dancing ALL the time.

High school was a challenge for me, mainly because I had to move to another country. However I ended up having a wonderful time in London and I believe that if I hadn't moved there, I probably wouldn't have heard of Trinity University. At first, I was completely captivated by Trinity's beautiful campus and it quickly stole my heart as my first choice school. However now that I am here and I've met tons of great people, got to enjoy amazing weather, and eat a lot of great food, I've realized that sometimes you can go on your first impression of something and make the right decision.

Computers have not always been my strong point. I know how to e-mail, instant message, and use Google, Microsoft word and PowerPoint: that's about it. I really hope taking this Computer Skills class can help me further my knowledge of computers so hopefully I can discover and learn how to use all the other great things a computer has to offer.

Well, here is a little video of me:
<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v24.nonxt3.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D8070522df0b74c99%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1330420881%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D7C55323D512279102FBAD43F53DD770B1BF2280A.858D5653DB167299AD618811AB838115D3B8B763%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D8070522df0b74c99%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3D7JBuqrZaPP4g4KQkWTqNQ32y6Vc&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Hopefully I'll be making many more blog entries later!

Jamila Reynolds
